 Whoever would be able to, Out Smart-Out Wit-Out Race the other Rollo's Nelson Adventure Race teams across the Alpine peaks, waterways and valleys of the Nelson Lakes National Park,
.. would be crowned the winners of Race 3 of the People's Choice New Zealand Adventure Racing Champs.
There was only one unanswered question as teams gathered on the Kerr Bay start-line. How much quicker will the 2 person teams combinations of Team ITM - John Harris & Andrew Martin, Busch Roofing - Dan Busch & Tony Bateup be from the 4 person 50/50 teams that included defending champions -Ten Events - Nathan & Jodie Fa'avae and Ralph & Fleur Lattimore, R&R Sport - Luke Chapman & Trevor & Rachel Voyce, with USA import Ali Bronsdon and Paced by Pawsey - Sophie Hart, Fleur Pawsey, Shane Armstrong & Nick Ross.
The first stage took teams on a 2km run to their waiting bikes for the ride to the Mt Robert car-park where they would leave their bikes and trek to Angelus Hut via the Speargrass track and return to the MT Robert car-park. Team ITM took the stage closely followed by R&R Sport and Busch Roofing. Once teams past Speargrass Hut they climbed through the snow up to Speargrass saddle for the descent into CP2 Angelus Hut which was surrounded by snow and the lake ½ frozen over. At CP2 Ten Events had were in the lead with Paced by Pawsey in 2nd with Team ITM just behind.
Team ITM would later say that, ‘they couldn't hang on, they were just faster'. Once back at the car-park teams return to the Kerr Bay start-line/transition area for the kayak stage, which took them to 5 checkpoints around Lake Rotoiti. Ten Events continued to lead followed by Paced by Pawsey with Team ITM taking time out of both teams and still in 3rd spot.

Stage 5 was an orienteering/rogaine style Go-n-Get, where teams ran & biked to collect the 12 controls required any order they liked. Ten Events return from Stage 5 still in the lead, however Team ITM had moved into 2nd with Paced by Pawsey now in 3rd with Busch Roofing and R&R Sports moving within striking distance of the lead.
The 12 hour teams finish line was after they had completed the stage 5 Go-n-Get and the 12 hour Duathlon was won by Just Swanning Around - Jo Harris and Margaret Parfitt in 12hours 26 minutes with the 12 hour Adventure race won by the Cable Bay Pirates - Dave Rudge, Jennifer Cassie, John Hart & Rob Hambrook in 13hours 43 minutes who had swapped the lead during the day with the 2nd place team Eddie R U OK - Ed Steenbergen & Nelson Batt 14hours 5 minutes and 3rd placed Tuesday Night Trillseekers - Ken Page, Irene Minchin, Wayne Jones & Euan McIntosh 15hours 32 minutes.
Stage 6 was the final stage, that took teams from St Arnaud to the Rainbow Ski field and return, it didn't look far on the map, but the cold night and the Biathlon between CP's 14 & 15, where teams were reduced to 1 bike per 2 competitors had them running and riding towards CP15 - the Rainbow Ski field car park was to make it longer. But ICE was to reduce the length of the Biathlon and during the night the distance between CP14 & CP15 was shorten and for the last 6 teams removed.
Once the daylight had left the temperature dropped to below freezing, so when teams reached the RED DEER Lodge Finish line where they would shared there race with crew and supporters in front of an open fire.

Returning to the finish 14hours and 38 minutes after they had left Kerr Bay and defending their title (and Nathan's 5th) - Ten Events won the Rollo's Nelson Adventure Race from Team ITM who were 22 minutes behind in 15 hours, with Paced by Pawsey finishing in 15hours and 18 minutes. Busch Roofing finished 4th in 15hours 30 minutes and R&R Sport rounded out the top 5 in 15hours 40 minutes.
