The
NZ Olympic Kayak Team is now in it's final build up to Beijing after
the first days racing at the World Cup meeting in Hungary. It's
been a mixed bag of fortunes and favourable results.
If early results from the heats
and semi's are an indication, then the Kiwi's are in top form bar
one incident as they race in Szeged south of Budapest.

For Steven Ferguson the World
Cup didn't start off to ideally, with a disqualification in the K1
500m for veering out of his lane.
When Ferguson stepped into
the K2 with Mike Walker for the 1000m race the Kiwis form started to
shine through. In their heat they placed 4th two seconds
behind the winners Great Britain in a time of 3:19.982., then in their
semi shot to the lead taking the win from USA by .138 second to claim
a final berth.

Erin Taylor New Zealand first
sprint Olympian placed third in the heats in a time of 1:52.834, just
over two seconds behind winner Sophia Paldarius from Sweden, to proceed
in to the next round of racing.
For Athlens Olympic Silver
medalist Ben Fouhy, Szeged 08 will be remembered for a self imposed
sidelining as he optimistically now looks forward to next weeks racing.
"Common sense prevailed today and after coming down to the course
ready to warm up I made a choice to not race as I wasn't feeling in
good health and with our next world cup in Duisburg just a week away
it made sense to rest up. As I have made that mistake before.." said
Fouhy.
