Chris Forne wins Transylvanian Open Print E-mail
Saturday, 11 August 2007
chrisfornebmsmChristchurch Adventurer Chris Forne won the Transylvanian Orienteering Open earlier this week, by 1 second from Norwegian Oyvind Helgerud. The current world champion in both adventure racing and rogaining

...is entering the final stages of his preparation for the World Orienteering Championships in the Ukraine. In true Chris Forne style this preparation has seen him adventuring through the wilds of Romania, this is a man bringing some of the soul back to high performance sport!

Before competing in the Transylvanian forests Forne and his partner Emily Wall navigated their way down the Fargas mountain chain in a week long mission, which including scrambling over Moldova, Romania's highest peak.
The local food and bunkering up for nights in deserted shepherd huts didn't seem to faze him however as he strolled to victory by over a minute in the first race of the Open, a 40 minute middle distance race, after arriving back in civilisation.
The long distance race the next day wasn't quite so successful, with the Norwegian from the world most famous orienteering club Halden SK taking it out and leaving Forne a total deficit of 90 seconds to make up on the final day.

The final day was a chasing start meaning whoever crossed the line first was the winner. Forne caught the Norwegian part way through the course and pipped him at the post in a fierce sprint finish becoming the orienteering champion of Translyvania.

Forne now joins up with the rest of the New Zealand team to compete at the Ukranian Open over the weekend before the start of the World Champs on the 16th of August.
