The Motatapu is New Zealand's iconic off road marathon, high country 50km mountain bike event or NEW for 2009 a 49km Adventure Run.
The marathon and MTB events run through the iconic Motatapu, Soho and Glencoe stations starting from Glendhu Bay, Lake Wanaka and finishing at Arrowtown.
This landmark event gives access on one day each year over a route that is otherwise not open to the public. The inaugural event was in 2005.
The 49km Adventure Run for teams for 2, the course follows the DoC Motatapu walking track, described in places as merely a “marked route” the track covers 49km of exposed and physically challenging backcountry terrain crossing the Motatapu and Soho Stations. Competitors will ascend a total of 2790 metres, traversing four peaks, (the highest point being Jack Halls Saddle at 1275metres above sea level), negotiating rough tussock-covered areas, long steep sidles and river crossings.
The 2010 event is scheduled for Saturday 13 March. This discussion group allows competitors to talk to other competitors about training tips, advice from previous competitors, organise training rides/runs in your area, organise to share rides to the event, find a team mate for the Adventure Run, basically anything to do with the Motatapu.
