The 50M outdoor at the New Plymouth Aquatic centre - on a sunny day it quite simply does not get any better. Well, only just. The pool at the hospital, you get the nurses sunbathing there. Bloody hard work swimming with a keel.

The ultimate resistance training, both body and mind Me i'm not a swimmer, the pool for me is the Pacific, has a wave maker, fresh food at your feet and men in grey suits that swim fast.

Worst pool - Glenogle, Dalry or Leith in Edinburgh. Only two lanes set up for lane swimming in the morning, one used exclusively by the old breast stroke brigade, the other by equally slow people who do not know pool etiquette (ie swim clockwise and pull over to let people pass when they touch your toes - it's written on the pool notices).
Best pool - another vote for Thames. Only when the dome came off did I have to share a lane but now that people's enthusiasm has worn off I almost always have a lane to myself for my entire 3km sessions (even when the squad is in and take up two lanes).

Karori is great in the mornings, typically only 2 or 3 to a lane and those in the fast and medium lanes understand pool etiquette. Downside is a highly suntanned old codger who swims in what seems to be a fluoro pink schlong pouch like those favoured by some Amazo tribes.

Hey Ally Bally Bee I thought you had to be Scottish-my Grandmother used to sing that song to me as a child! Try the public baths in Oban. Jings!
p.s. what was so special about Coulter's Candy anyway?

In the past I have swam at Karori and will be swimming there again soon. Its brilliant just me, my mate and this speedy ginger that despite not wearing speeds goes pretty quick.
I have been swimming at Kilbirnie a bit and I wonder if anyone else is getting a little bit annoyed with the unofficial swim squads that operate there. I ussually swim in the fast lane but find myself completely out of sync with the 'squad' so have to go in the medium lanes and swim over people...

Not sure about the Coulter's Candy but I do miss the oddfellows and irn bru. I'm half Scottish and a couple of years back I spent 18 months living in Edinburgh. My flatmate gave me this nickname (really called Alison) and it's kind of stuck. Never swam at Oban but I did go there in order to run the Isle of Mull half mara (it's timed to coincide with the ferry timetable so you can travel over in the morning and get the ferry back in the afternoon).

Sigh - TSW used to be the best place in the world to swim, and all of us who used to swim there are still devastaed at it's closure. Even the lane swimming you'd get a lane to yourself and Scott taking the squad was fab. Unfortunately the pool has been demolished this week, so no chance of that re-opening. I haven't found Kilbirnie too bad in the mornings but I can see what Shanon means when he says about the "unofficial" squads.

when i first moved to wellington (i no longer live there) they had the unofficial squads at kilbirnie as well, but it never seemed to get too busy so medium lane was usually fine. but i soon gave up on driving all the way over there and went to karori when i didn't go to tsw.
the tsw pool was horrible though. tai had some pretty good and interesting sessions though.

A great pool to go to is the Glen Innes ymca (33m). You're almost guaranteed to find a fast lane all to yourself every time.

I wrote down a lot of those TSW swim sessions but they just don't compare with the real thing...

Karori for sure...as long as you get there at a good time and it's not packed with school kids!

[Does anyone know if any swimmer has ever been banned for tumble turning. Yip that's right. Here I am one quiet morning empty lane plodding up and down my last training session before Rotorua half ironman. just a 2km quicky. I get stopped 6 or so lengths into it and told "get out you are tumble turning". I later find out (after xmas) that I have been banned for tumble turning. this has to qualify for pool rage only problem I can't rage about it in the pool now. Any suggestions, help, is it legal, can pool staff enforce ban. I am not a happy swimmer having to travel some distance to another pool (strangely enough run by the same council - go figure).
