Ride takes off!

The Hamilton Airport hosted a different type of flyer tonight with the inaugural RIDE Cycling Festival Runway Criterium.

For the first time ever, the main runway was closed for over an hour to allow more than 60 cyclists across three grades the opportunity to race a criterium, a type of closed circuit bike race.

The racing was following by a Q&A with three of New Zealand’s most celebrated men’s cyclists; Greg Henderson, a former professional track and road racing cyclist who rode for NZ in five Olympic Games and completed 11 Grand Tours, Shane Archbold - a current pro rider for UCI World Team Deceuninck–Quick-Step, and former Olympian George Bennett who currently races for UCI World Team Team Jumbo–Visma and was the first New Zealander to win the general classification at a UCI World Tour cycling event in 2019.

Criterium winners were Nick Kergozou (A Grade), Andrew Weatherley (B Grade) and James Ward (C Grade).

The event continues all weekend, with free activities for families in Victoria Square including a free movie night on Saturday evening from 7pm. The event culminates with the Vantage Elite and Under 23 National Championship Road Race on Sunday.
