Rasdex Classic River Race Series - Woodstock Prologue Two Race

Kayak racing doesn’t get any better that this! Conditions were absolutely perfect for Prologue Two of the Rasdex Classic River Race Series on the Waimakariri River. The river was flowing at a healthy 65 cumex, the sun was shinning and a light tail wind was blowing. 134 paddlers making the most of the hot fast conditions. Our biggest field yet!

The novice women got the race underway. So encouraging seeing 23 women racing in this section, all new to kayaking this season. The race was won by Holly Weston just over a minute ahead of Lauren Robb with Bridget Sheed in third place. A clean sweep of the podium for these Topsport Kayaking graduates. Well done ladies.

The novice men were next. This was the biggest category of the day with 30 paddlers racing. Chris Adams who placed second in the first race was keen to go one better and challenge for the win. He did that in style finishing 1.30 minutes ahead of second place John McIntosh. Will Edwards moved up a place for the first race to round out the podium. Another Topsport trio.

The Open Women’s Race was lead from start to finish by Katie Cambie. Katie went hard off the line and made an early choice just 1km into the race to take an alternative braid to the novice field. She held her lead finishing in a time of 46.06 with second place Nicole Symons 4.13 minutes back. Katherince Reardon came in third in a time of 50.56.

Kate Cambie - Open Female Winner

The Open Men’s Race was a much tighter battle. Training partners Steven Armstrong and Jimmy Feathery pushing each other stroke for stroke. Steven taking line honours in 42.02 to post the fastest time of the day. Jimmy just 19 seconds back with Sam Manson a further 7 seconds back from him.

Steven Armstrong - Open Male Winner

In the veteran section Sarah Helmore took the victory in 49.12, the only other women to post a time under 50 minutes. Sam Owles paddled strongly for second place with Simone Faulkner in third. In the men’s veteran section David Knight came through for a great win nearly a minute clear of second place Nathan Walsh with Sven Zaalberg claiming third.

Jenni Blyleven also had a great win in the Classic section in a time of 50.30. Suzanne McLister paddled well for second place with Steph Craighead a couple of minutes back in third. The men’s Classic section saw another battle of training partners with Devern Burchett finish 44 seconds ahead of Tony McGuire. Miles Watson paddling home for third.

In the Junior race Kate Brown and Cole Beeman held there own to record speedy times against the older competitors with Kate recording the fourth fastest female time of the day.

Once again thank you to the Arawa Canoe Club Race Committee for all the hard work organising this event, the Topsport Kayaking Crew for keeping everyone safe out on the river, our major sponsor Rasdex , Further Faster for the great support as well and to all the competitors who made it such a great day.

Just one more Prologue to go before the Rasdex Classic River Race Main Event on Saturday the 14th of December. We can only hope for similar conditions!

See you all at the next race on Sunday the 24th of November.
