Man's body found at Mt Somers
Police have confirmed a 29-year-old man has been found dead at Mt Somers. They were notified at around 4.30pm yesterday that the man was overdue.
Police used phone polling technology over the next few hours which indicated that the man’s phone had remained in one location.
A helicopter was sent into the area to search for the man and his body was located shortly before 10pm.
It appears that he had fallen near Pinnacles Hut.
The man's name will not be released until next of kin notifications have taken place.
Department of Conservation confirm that a volunteer hut warden's body was located near the Pinnacles Hut in what appears to have been a fall. That Police have recovered his body today with DOC support.
The young man "was a DOC volunteer hut warden at Woolshed Creek Hut in the Mount Somers area in Canterbury. He was excited about volunteering for DOC." DOC reported.
"He was last seen at the Pinnacles Hut on Thursday afternoon and was planning to return to the Woolshed Creek Hut."
"DOC are devastated by this tragic loss of life and are focusing on support of his partner and family and returning the body as soon as possible."
"The Department will be reviewing the tragic incident to determine what happened."
